UX Course Process

UX Course Process

The course is online with video lessons and interviews on the UXDI platform. There are 10 modules worth 40% with all content to be watched and a professional exam at the end worth 60%. The UX course allowed me to pick a certain area of focus for the course from car rental, flight planning or hotel booking. I chose the hotel booking as It was the most enjoyable for me and I knew I could get a lot of people involved for the research. My friends and family all like going on a holiday and always have a lot to say when booking somewhere to stay.

UX Learning

UX Learning

There was a huge amount of information to learn. The first section was an introduction to UX and the golden thread. A term used by UXDI to discuss a generic flow of UX within business. There was an introduction to tools that are regularly used within the industry such as Figma, Google Analytics and books such as The Design of Everyday Things, Don't Make Me Think, Mom Test and The Inmates are Running the Asylum. Learning product design, integrity, desirability, agile thinking, prioritisation, goals, behaviours, paradox of specificity and understanding mental models was tested with a quiz at the end.

User research, psychology, laws, analysis, structure, Interactions, design principles, patterns, flow, wire-framing and usability feedback were detailed topics that needed to be learned and questioned in the exam.

Project 01 - Competitive Benchmarking - Passed 🎉

Project 01 - Competitive Benchmarking - Passed 🎉

The first project after learning a huge range of topics regarding UX was to complete competitive benchmarking analysis on hotel booking. I wanted to focus on a premium hotel brand for my brief however I thought it be good to do research on a wide range of brands that might influence design decisions along the way. I also included brands such Air BnB and Premier Inn to allow variety on results.

I quickly learnt that competitors were using different patterns depending on the brand image they wanted to portray. Mid to low level service sites were purely functional with intelligent CTA's and hooks for sales however the more premium brands would have a slower and more visual approach to the structure of experience.

Project 02 - Online Survey - Passed 🎉

Project 02 - Online Survey - Passed 🎉

From the learning of setting up good questions this was an important and interesting project for me. This was the first time I created a survey and found it quite hard initially to avoid yes, no answers and offer open ended questions. I was happy with the result but feel that I need to develop more in this area.

Project 03 - Note Taking - Passed 🎉

Project 03 - Note Taking - Passed 🎉

For the note taking the class was given several interviews to analyse. I learnt how to break down reactions and actions into categories and clearly annotate these into a document that could be then used for further studies. Some tasks that the participants were asked to do seemed quite simple yet the thought processes changed direction considerably.

Project 04 - Usability Interviews - Passed 🎉

Project 04 - Usability Interviews - Passed 🎉

Four interviews were provided to use in project 3 but for project 4 I had to reach out to members of the public and do interviews myself. I conducted another four interviews with friends and family with a more developed method of asking questions with the new experience of conducting interviews professionally. Three were onsite and one was remote. This one felt a little detached but after reviewing it several times I got a similar amount of high quality information.

Project 05 - Affinity Diagram - Passed 🎉

Project 05 - Affinity Diagram - Passed 🎉

After three different types of research following the technique of triangulation it was time to find patterns by analysing the data. Also it was a chance to learn how to facilitate a workshop. I linked up with fellow student Sarah Jackson and we combined our findings on a miro-board. We set ourselves 2 hours to group all our research information and then arrange into a timeline from the start of the journey to the end.

Project 07 - Customer Flow - Passed 🎉

Project 07 - Customer Flow - Passed 🎉

Task 7 was a individual role taking the information from the customer journey and to build the primary flow. The primary flow shows the main function which could be for a MVP or first release of the product. I initially sketched it out using procreate and then moved it onto notes and into Miro. By the time I got into Miro I felt like I had a really strong base for the primary flow.

Project 09 & 10 - Lo-Fi Design and Prototype - Passed 🎉

Project 09 & 10 - Lo-Fi Design and Prototype - Passed 🎉

The final set of projects were to create the product with a design of the flow that has been developed through research and a prototype example that would be used for stakeholders and clients to explain the findings.

Challenges

A huge learning curve in a whole new area of design.

Wins

I love problem solving, making things better and building from my lego days so that helped me get through.

Take aways

Such a great course and so glad I got through the hard work. I now feel that I can move into an area of design that is more fitting with who I am.
